You may have read the book when you were younger and dreamed of an adventure on Treasure Island. Well, you can have that adventure – there’s a Treasure Island right here in the US. It’s one of the Clearwater Beach area islands in the gul of Mexio in Florida.
Treasure Island boasts almost four miles of unspoiled beaches. Each of the three beach areas has its own characteristics and appeal:
Mid -Island Beach is a very wide beach. It has the widest white sand beach on the Gulf Coast. This is where you’ll find most of the gulf-front motels, hotels, resorts and condo-hotels. It’s a bustling area with a variety of restaurants and shops all in a short walking distance.
There is also the .85 mile Treasure Island Beach Trail, perfect for walking, skateboarding, dog-walking and bicycling. The trail meanders along the beach through sea oats dunes between 104th and 119th Avenues, parallel to the shoreline.
At the north end of the island you’ll find John’s Pass and Sunshine Beach. this end of teh island is residential and has the more of the feel of island living. Since it’s not a commercial area, parking is limited and you may have to walk from the Municipal parking lot to the beach. But it’s totally worth the walk. There are 12 parking spots at 126th Avenue.
Sunshine Beach is the perfect romantic getaway spot. There are several options for vacation rentals in this area – private homes and condos and small bed and breakfast establishments right on the beach.
At the southern end of the island you’ll find Sunset Beach. Mid-century fisherman cottages mix with lush Key West-style homes. Check out conditions on the beach via this Treasure Island live web-cam. There are also several rental options in this area – one of the best known is the Sunset Beach House. It’s a favorite for beach weddings.
